This isn’t exactly news, but I wanted to go ahead and document it on my blog–especially since if you Google this under the original spelling, ““Talking Points on Recogntion of Jewish State” [sic] you get only six results, and if you spell it correctly–“Talking Points on Recognition of Jewish State”–you get one. As important as it is, almost nobody seems to be talking about it (though Frontpage Magazine did mention it yesterday).
Courtesy of Ariel Zellman’s blog:
A fear that recognition of a Jewish state would compromise demands of refugee return and complete Israeli evacuation of the West Bank, however, is not the only concern. It is also that such recognition:
could also strengthen Israel’s claims of sovereignty over all of Historic Palestine, including the OPT. Recognizing the Jewish state implies recognition of a Jewish people and recognition of its right to self-determination. Those who assert this right also assert that the territory historically associated with this right of self-determination (i.e., the self-determination unit) is all of Historic Palestine. Therefore, recognition of the Jewish people and their right of self-determination may lend credence to the Jewish people’s claim to all of Historic Palestine.
From one side, it is not difficult to perceive the PA’s dilemma. They feel that recognition of a Jewish right to self-determination is necessarily in conflict with their own. Control of the land, in this perspective, is an all-or-nothing proposition. Either the Palestinians have an exclusive claim to the land because Jews have no historic or national rights, or the Jews have an exclusive claim because they do have historic and national rights.
Emphasis above is mine. I’ve said for a long time now that the real issue to Israel’s enemies is the “insult” of having a Jewish state in which Jews can have the right of self-determination–everything else is window dressing.
To every one who attacks Israel for it’s various flaws, real and imaginary: There are over a million and a half Arab citizens of Israel. How many Jews live in the much larger Arab states around Israel? Why were some 800,000 Jews forced out of the Arab nations in 1948? Who exactly is ethnically-cleansing who here? And why do you object to the right of Jews to have a country in which to practice their own self-determination? Are you seriously racist enough to believe that Jews are the only people in the world who have no right to have a place of their own where they can live in peace?
Anyway, this needs to be reblogged around the web. C’mon, who wants to have the chance to be in an elite group on Google? How often do you really get the chance to be one of less than a dozen hits on any Google search?
